1. What is Fuel Up to Play 60?

a. Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP 60) is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by National Dairy Council (NDC) and National Football League (NFL), in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

b. Fuel Up to Play 60 is designed to engage and empower youth to take action for their own health by implementing long-term, positive changes for themselves and their schools and inspiring their friends to do the same. Customizable and non-prescriptive program components are grounded in research and include tools and resources, in-school promotional materials, a website, youth challenges and rewards.

c. In its first year, over 60,000 schools enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60 nationwide. Together with the involvement of supporting organizations, Fuel Up to Play 60 will further its progress by expanding its reach and impact in the years to come.

2. Who is the target audience for Fuel Up to Play 60?

a. Fuel Up to Play 60 is offered to all schools with students in grades K-12, at no cost. The program is targeted to both tweens and teens; specifically those aged 9-13 (grades 4 to 8).

3. Why should schools get involved with Fuel Up to Play 60?

a. Wellness is an important issue in schools across the country. A growing body of evidence indicates that poor nutrition, physical inactivity and obesity are directly associated with lower levels of school achievement. 1, 2 Fuel Up to Play 60 helps support schools’ academic achievement goals. Helping to effect positive change in the healthy eating and physical activity environment in schools is a step in the right direction to having more focused, engaged, and higher-achieving students.

b. Fuel Up to Play 60 responds to real-world needs in today’s schools with wellness tools that complement—not compete with—the academics-focused environment. The program supports national health, nutrition and physical education/physical activity guidelines, and standards, and it helps schools meet their wellness goals, supporting a coordinated school health approach. If a school already has existing wellness programs or efforts, Fuel Up to Play 60 can complement and enhance them with additional resources, tools, rewards and incentives for students, adult program advisers, and the school.

4. What role do parents, teachers, school staff, principals, and administrators play in the program?

a. Youth need a support system to help them make healthy nutrition and physical activity choices. Lasting changes happen faster when parents, schools and communities are involved. Through Fuel Up to Play 60, adults can serve as guides, role models and champions for healthy kids and healthy schools. Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages students to work collaboratively with adult Program Advisors to implement school-wide healthy eating and physical activity Plays. Guidance by these adult school leaders is crucial for encouraging student activation and participation in Fuel Up to Play 60. Administrators can show their commitment to student health and school wellness – and support school achievement goals and earn rewards through Fuel Up to Play 60.

5. Why is NDC teaming up with NFL?

a. Fuel Up to Play 60 builds on an existing relationship between the NFL and NDC and represents a new way of approaching the health and wellness environment. Both organizations are harnessing their resources to empower youth to take an active role in improving their personal health and school environment. NDC and NFL believe that engaging youth is a crucial strategy in making substantive and positive changes and will make the multi-year program uniquely poised for success.

6. How does the NFL, NFL Clubs and its players participate in this initiative?

a. NFL and NDC worked together on all aspects of the initiative from the grassroots level to development of the name and branding. Select NFL players serve as local ambassadors and role models to inspire youth to engage in healthy behaviors and physical activity, and each NFL Club works with their state and regional dairy councils to integrate program activation and communication efforts surrounding Fuel Up to Play 60. Elements of the NFL’s existing fitness program have and continue to be incorporated into the initiative, all part of NFL PLAY 60: The NFL Movement for an Active Generation. NFL PLAY 60 is the NFL’s long-term commitment which encourages kids and their families to stay active for at least 60 minutes a day. Visit www.NFLRush.com for more information.

7. How will Fuel Up to Play 60 attract youth who may not be interested in football or have an NFL Club in their city?

a. Fuel Up to Play 60 incorporates both nutrition and physical activity and is part of a broader effort to motivate all youth to take action for their health. The overarching physical fitness message is not limited to excitement for the sport of football. Essentially, Fuel Up to Play 60 aims to attract a diverse range of students with a wide variety of interests. The program does not have to be specific to an NFL Club in order to be activated in schools. We have incorporated various youth interests in selecting activities to highlight through all program tools and resources.

Please note that on some browsers, the PDF file might open in a separate browser window or tab or might be downloaded to a specific location on your computer. If it is downloaded, you will need to navigate to it on your computer and open and view the file.

5. How do you print or save tools and resources that are PDFs?

a. To print a PDF, open the PDF and then click on “File” in the upper right hand corner of your browser window. You will see “Print” as an option and you should click on “Print.”

1. What is Fuel Up to Play 60?

a. Fuel Up to Play 60 is the in-school nutrition and physical activity program founded by National Dairy Council® (NDC) and the National Football League, based on a mutual commitment to the health of the next generation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has joined the effort as well as many businesses and industry leaders. This comprehensive program focuses on promoting healthier eating and more physical activity opportunities school wide. Students and adults work together to select and implement a series of “Plays” that result in long-term changes in these two important areas. Along the way, students become empowered to lead – by making healthy decisions, taking action for change, and encouraging their friends to do the same.

2. Why should schools get involved in this program?

Campaign, the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan, the USDA’s Healthier US School Challenge and the CDC’s Coordinated School Health Program.

4. What is the School Wellness Kit?

a. The School Wellness Kit was distributed to those early supporters who signed up for the program. It contains all you need to implement the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, but it is not necessary you obtain a School Wellness Kit, since you can access the online version on www.FuelUpToPlay60.com. The School Wellness Kit will help raise student awareness about the importance of healthy eating and physical activity and engage the entire school in the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity “Plays.” The kit includes a banner to display in your school, stickers and removable decals, a Quick Start Guide to show you how your school can Fuel Up to Play 60 in Six Easy Steps, custom folders for key stakeholders that provide information about how each key contributor can help, a template timeline to help you visualize your game plan, and an introductory DVD that highlights the program’s goals and elements.

5. Are there funding opportunities for Fuel Up to Play 60?

The purpose of the funding is to help your school increase student awareness of and access to healthy eating and physical activity, and sustainable changes in making your school a healthier place. Funding may be used to support a range of program-related activities from in-school promotions to a kickoff and launch of the program. Applications for funds are accepted several times throughout the year, so schools can apply at different stages of their program. The awarding of funds is competitive and based on your application. a. For Fuel Up to Play 60 to work best, each school should have at least one Program Advisor – an adult who serves as the program’s champion, engages, and empowers students. The Program Advisor acts as the “coach” for the program – helps to build a team and draft key players, supporting and mentoring them as they launch and implement Fuel Up to Play 60. He or she helps get buy-in from the principal and engages them with key adult decision makers, and helps them to select and implement their Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Plays. Ideally, the role is shared by more than one adult, and plays a critical part in helping the team make a positive difference in the school wellness environment. And Program Advisors have access to rewards, recognition, and funding to make it all happen. Learn more.
